Sri Lanka is an island country in South Asia, located in the Indian Ocean to the south of India, southwest of the Bay of Bengal and to the southeast of the Arabian Sea with a warm & tropical climate. Its capital is Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, and its commercial capital and largest city is Colombo. Sri Lanka's history spans over 3,000 years, with evidence of pre-historic human settlements dating back to at least 125,000 years. The country has a rich cultural heritage, and the first known Buddhist writings of Sri Lanka, the Pāli Canon, date back to the 29 BC. Its geographic location and deep harbors made it of great strategic importance from the time of the ancient Silk Road through to the modern Maritime Silk Road. The island is home to many cultures, languages and ethnicities, dating back over 2500 years. It is influenced primarily by Buddhism and Hinduism and is the home to two main traditional cultures: The Sinhalese, which is centered in the ancient cities of Kandy and Anuradhapura, and the Tamil, which is centered in the city of Jaffna. The country’s official currency is Sri Lankan rupee.

As the country’s largest city, Colombo has a population of 5.6 million. It is the financial center of the island and a tourist destination, and is also a busy and vibrant place with a mixture of modern life and colonial buildings and ruins. Colombo was known to ancient traders 2,000 years ago because of its strategic position along the sea trade routes and for having a large harbor. Its tourist attractions are; the Galle Face Green Park, the Gangaramaya Temple, the The Viharamahadevi Park, the Independence Memorial Hall, Pettah Floating Market and the Old Dutch Hospital.

Kandy was the last capital of the ancient kings' era of Sri Lanka and is both an administrative and religious city. It also has the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), which is one of the most sacred places of worship in the Buddhist world, and was declared a world heritage site by in 1988. The Kandy City Centre Complex is the most modern commercial complex in Sri Lanka, built with ultra-modern features and also incorporating traditional architecture of Kandy relating to the medieval period of the country. The city also has a fully equipped supermarket, modern restaurants and an entertainment zone.

The name of the coastal town of “Bentota” is derived from a mythical story which claims a demon named 'Bem' ruled the tota or riverbank. It is situated on the southern bank of the Bentota River, and is a tourist attraction with a local airport and a few world class hotels. It is mainly a destination for watersports, but also provides a system of ancient medicine called “Ayurveda”! The city is famous for its alcoholic beverage made out of coconut nectar called “Toddy”, and also has a turtle hatchery, located on the Induruwa Beach. Its tourist attractions are; Bentota Beach, the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery, the Brief Garden, the Galapatha Raja Maha Vihare Buddhist temple and the Richy Skylark Helipad which operates helicopter joyrides in Bentota.
